No lazing in the Summer sun at Wharfedale Montessori this term as Finlay (year 6) earns a big pat on the back for having fully rebuilt a bicycle.
Jeremy, the Principal of Wharfedale Montessori, and Finlay have been working together for the last six weeks on restoring a bicycle. Finlay says, “It’s been fun to do. And I’ve just really enjoyed being able to follow through with something I am interested in.”
Jeremy who joined the school last September, is also a keen cyclist in his free time. He explains how Finlay was able to follow his own interest and learn new skills at his own pace, and enjoy the sense of accomplishing a tangible result. “The self-confidence that a project like rebuilding a bike can instil is immeasurable”, says Jeremy.
When asked what next, Finlay’s reply was that he wants to sell the bike and with the proceeds buy another bike for some one else to strip and rebuild. It looks likes Jeremy is going to be kept busy!
