Wharfedale Montessori School
Located on the beautiful Bolton Abbey Estate in North Yorkshire, Wharfedale Montessori Preschool and Primary provides a nurturing and individualised education. The location, Strid Wood, is designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI)., and we make great use of our beautiful location.
Founded in 1990 by Jane Lord, the school is inspired by a passionate belief in the benefits of a Montessori education, to give students hands-on and practical instruction in a high-quality environment. Initially the school was established as a Children’s House focused on ages 3-6 years, but due to overwhelming parent demand the school expanded, becoming one of the first Montessori schools in the UK to offer primary education (6-11 years).

Our Reputation
In September 2024, Jeremy Clarke was appointed as Principal and Graham Lord continues in his role as School Bursar, together with daughter Emily who is Business Manager.
Wharfedale Montessori School has gained a nationally recognised reputation for delivering the very highest standard of Montessori education, for both the Early Years and the primary age groups. The Lord family’s dedication to providing quality Montessori education was recognised in 2014 by the Montessori Schools Association when they were awarded Montessorians of the Year. They remain active in the larger Montessori community, with the school identified as a leader in the delivery of Montessori education nationally.

Our Ethos
At Wharfedale Montessori School our aim is to enable children to achieve their full potential, to be happy, to grow in knowledge and confidence, to be able to find their place in the world, enjoy it and do well.
The ethos of the school is as valid to our community today as it was when our Mission Statement was first set out back in 1990; to provide an outstanding education and level of care for our children in line with Montessori principles.
Our aim is to help children to develop to become the responsible citizens of the future.
